Artist Statement
As a performer and a maker, I draw inspiration from dance and theater modalities in order to strike a balance between dynamic, athletic, full-bodied movement and pedestrian virtuosity that accentuates subtlety and celebrates vulnerability within human connection. I am predominantly drawn to work that simultaneously encourages individuality and celebrates community, and I value collaboration, not only with other dancers, but with actors, writers, and musicians as well. I desire to work in both proscenium and immersive environments, and the task of performing in close proximity to my fellow artists and to members of an audience excites me.
Within my own devising practice, I highlight an array of complex, imperfect, and distinctly human characters, allowing viewers to bear witness to the extremes of their conscious and subconscious experience—their overwhelming fears, their darkest shadows, and their scintillating hopes—within the context of imaginary circumstances and abstraction. I aspire to create this authenticity by assigning believable actions, tasks, and psycho-physical gestures to the characters I build, gradually introducing sense memory and abstracted movement throughout my creative process in order to allow room for individual interpretation without sacrificing the foundation of intentional, justified movement.
It is my hope that my work, through showcasing attributes of empathy, resilience, and connection, will serve as a catalyst for open-mindedness and a deeper understanding of diverse experiences within my audiences. I also aspire to advocate for broader access to higher education in the arts to ensure the presence of underrepresented communities within the fields of dance and theatre.
